AI Overviews

AI Overviews are snapshots of key information, written by generative AI, that Google shows in some search results, with links to web pages for reading further.

What they are and when they appear

Google's help page for searchers describes an AI Overview as an AI-generated snapshot of key information, with links for anyone who wants to dig deeper. One appears when Google's systems decide that generative AI can be especially helpful for the search in front of them (Google Search Help).

Google tells site owners that an overview is shown only when its systems judge that it adds something to the usual results, so many searches get none. When one is built, Google may run several related searches behind the scenes to find a wider set of supporting links than one search would turn up (Google Search Central).

How a page comes to be linked from one

Google's guidance sets no extra test and asks for no special markup. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page has to be in Google's index and allowed to show a snippet in ordinary results (Google Search Central).

The groundwork for the rest of Search still counts, and Google spells it out. Crawling has to be allowed in robots.txt. Your pages should be easy to reach through links from your other pages and pleasant to use. What matters should be in text, your structured data should match the words visitors see, and your Business Profile should be up to date (Google Search Central).

None of this puts a page into a particular overview. Google's systems choose which pages an overview links to, search by search.

They make mistakes

Google warns searchers that AI Overviews can and will make mistakes, and tells them to check important information in more than one place (Google Search Help).

For a local business, a mistake might be last year's opening hours or a service you stopped offering. When your hours change or you drop a service, update your site and your Business Profile the same day.

Measuring them, and limiting them

Google counts visits from its AI features as part of your search traffic in Search Console. They sit in the Performance report, under the Web search type (Google Search Central).

To hold back what Search shows from a page, Google points to the controls ordinary results already use: nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex (Google Search Central). None of them is aimed at overviews alone.

Google calls AI Overviews a core part of Search that searchers cannot turn off, though its Web filter shows them text links only (Google Search Help).

How the scan checks the groundwork

The free scan cannot tell you whether an overview links to you. It checks two settings that can rule a page out before its content counts for anything: a robots.txt that tells Google to stay away from important pages (T1), and a noindex on your homepage or a page in your main menu (T2).

Whether AI assistants name your business is a separate question. The Growth plan includes an AI-search visibility report.

Questions

Can I pay Google to be one of the sources an AI Overview cites?

No. Google says it never accepts money to include or rank sites in its search results, and that advertising with Google has no effect on a site's presence there (Google Search Central). A supporting link has to be a page in Google's index, so the way in is the groundwork above.

What should I do if an AI Overview gets my business wrong?

Look for the wrong detail on your own site, in your structured data and in your Business Profile, and correct it wherever it appears. Google names an up-to-date Business Profile, and structured data that matches your visible text, among the basics for its AI features (Google Search Central).

Should I stop Google from using my pages in AI Overviews?

Not as a rule. The controls that limit it, nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex, also cut what your ordinary listing shows (Google Search Central), and noindex takes the page out of Google results entirely. Use them only on a page you would rather show without a snippet, or keep out of Search altogether.

Where this fits in our work

We handle this as part of AI search (GEO): Site work that helps ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI features read your site, understand who you are and cite you.
